Q - Can a patient have an M.R.I. scan if they have Filshie Clips implanted? A - Yes, it is possible to carry out an M.R.I. scan as the titanium contained within the Filshie Clip is non-magnetic, unlike stainless steel. It is important to note that a woman with Hulka Clips implanted cannot undergo an M.R.I. scan as the jaws of this device are made of plastic and incorporate a gold-plated stainless steel spring clip. Q - Does the Filshie Clip contain any nickel? A - Metal sensitivities are not uncommon in patients and nickel is one of the commonest. The metal components of the Filshie Clip are commercially pure titanium, ASTM B265-98; grades 1 and 2. Neither of these grades of titanium contains any nickel. However, any clinician that is concerned about the possibility of a reaction in a patient should conduct a "patch test" before the patient goes to theatre. To perform the test, tape a Filshie Clip to the inside of the patient's forearm using a non-allergenic adhesive tape. Keep the arm warm for two hours. After the two hours, remove the tape and Clip from the forearm and examine the site for evidence of localised histamine production. An inflamed patch on the skin will indicate this. If a positive "patch test" is obtained, the patient may be sensitive to one of the constituents in the Clip. Q - How often should a Filshie Clip Applicator (single load) be serviced? A - It is absolutely vital that all Filshie Clip Applicators are regularly serviced and maintained to ensure an optimum performance level. Failure to observe this procedure could result in the Applicator performing below the required specification and standard. If an Applicator has not been serviced within the last 12 months, we strongly recommend that it should not be used. A poorly maintained applicator may not close Clips tightly enough to fully occlude the Fallopian tube. Like all mechanical equipment the Filshie Clip Applicator will deteriorate with use and age. It is strongly recommended that Applicators are serviced and re-adjusted at least once a year or after 100 procedures. This must be carried out by Femcare or their appointed service agent. Please note that appointed service agents are only those that have been fully trained by Femcare technicians. Q - How can users monitor the number of times that they use their Filshie Clip Applicator? A - To encourage our customers to monitor the usage of their equipment a Service Reminder Card is provided with all new Applicators or any that have been serviced recently. On completion of the surgical procedure, operators should routinely monitor the number of times their applicator has been used by ticking the corresponding box on the card provided. This will enable them to plan when applicators need to be returned for servicing.
